There may be no greater stress when driving than a parallel parking situation. Your palms get sweaty, your heart races, and you find it hard to concentrate on what you’re doing. It’s even worse when you have passengers in the car and you’re all in a hurry. Don’t worry though, because the new 2016 Volkswagen Passat has Park Distance Control, also known as Park Pilot. There are two kinds of sensors on the front and back of new Volkswagens: ultrasonic and radar. The radar sensors are useful for detecting faraway objects moving at high speeds. These sensors are useful for the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert features. The ultrasonic sensors, on the other hand, detect obstacles at very short distances and when the vehicle is moving slowly. They’re the key to the Park Pilot and Park Assist functions.
VW Park Distance Control (Park Pilot)
The Park Pilot feature on 2016 Volkswagens uses the ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles near the front and back of the car. The sensors “see” things using echos, just like a bat does. And have you ever seen a bat bump into something while parallel parking? We think not. Park Distance Control automatically goes to work when you’re doing a low-speed maneuver. It’ll show you a top-down diagram of your vehicle on your infotainment screen and give you visual and audio alerts when you’re getting too close to something. It’s got your back, and your front.
