2020 Volkswagen Golf R Release Date Details
If you’ve been waiting for the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R to be revealed, chances are that you’re pretty confused by now. We’re about half of the way through 2020 and there’s no sign of the 2020 Golf R.
So, when is the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R coming out?
2020 Volkswagen Golf R Release Date
Confirmed by a Volkswagen spokesperson in an interview with MotorTrend magazine, the 2020 Volkswagen Golf R has been discontinued. However, the self-marketed “hot hatch” 2020 Golf GTI is currently available. There is hope Golf R fans, though. In that same MotorTrend interview, the Volkswagen spokesperson stated that the Golf R will return with the 8th generation (Mk8) Golf for the 2021 model year. The likes of Motor1 and Car and Driver have released spy shots and videos of the Mk8 Golf R in action. The official 2021 Golf R reveal was set for July 2020. It is unknown if the current health pandemic will cause Volkswagen to postpone it. There have also been scattered rumors of a Golf R Plus based on the 2014 Golf R 400 concept, but those rumors have yet to be confirmed.
2020 Golf GTI Specs
While we’re sad the 2020 Golf R is discontinued, the 2020 Golf GTI is definitely a worthy option. It has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TSI engine that produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired to an excellent six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 2020 Golf GTI also features performance brakes, a VAQ limited-slip front differential lock, variable ratio steering, and DCC adaptive damper chassis control.
