The 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is just about the most fun you can have on four wheels. But choosing which Golf GTI is right for you can be a daunting task. There are are actually four models with two or three trims for each. We’ll help you sort through all of the options in this guide. Let’s start with how they’re all similar.
Every Golf GTI, regardless of body type or trim level, starts with a 210 hp turbocharged engine, sport suspension and driving mode selection. Every Golf GTI has the option of adding the Performance Package for 10 extra horsepower and a trick VAQ differential. They also all have the new MIB II infotainment system with 6.5-inch touchscreen, USB port, Bluetooth music streaming, voice control and more. That’s the fun stuff. The practical bits include a whopping 52.7 cubic feet of hatchback cargo space with the seats folded down, and safety features that make the 2016 Golf GTI an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+.
The S trim is the most affordable and it has one key feature that’s unique — the Clark plaid cloth seats. These seats are so attractive and comfortable that many people are willing to give up all of the other optional equipment to have them. That’s probably the toughest decision a GTI buyer faces. Next up in the range is the SE trim. In addition to the leather interior, this trim includes the Fender Premium Audio system, which is worth its weight in audio gold, and a panoramic sunroof, plus keyless access with push-button start. The price gap is pretty big, but it’s still a great value if these are features you think you couldn’t live without.
While the S and SE trims let you choose whether you want two doors or four for a minor price difference, the Autobahn trim is only available with four doors. After all, this is the trim for people who want the ultimate in convenience options. Autobahn trim starts with seats that are now 12-way power-adjustable and builds from there. You also get dual-zone automatic climate control to make everyone in the car happy — just set it and forget it. The biggest upgrade, though, has to be the great built-in navigation system. No more fumbling around with your smartphone or an old-fashioned map. How else are you going to find your next adventure?
